After an almost 2-month wait, the identity of Archie Mitchell's murderer was finally revealed today. Shortly after her husband leaped to his death whilst trying to escape arrest, mother-to-be Stacey Branning confessed to father-in-law Max that she was the person who killed Archie.
There much much interest in the revelation of the murderer, as millions watched the first-ever live episode aired in commemoration of the soap's 25th anniversary. With more than 30 different characters having the motive (Archie wasn't really the most popular person in Albert Square) and opportunity (many were in and out of the Vic on the night of the murder), the betting houses had a rather busy day.
William Hill took bets worth 500,000 pounds, comfortably beating the amount taken for the JR killer mystery in American soap Dallas in the 1980s. Ladbrokes also experience its busiest 24 ever with regards to betting on a television series, taking 100,000 pounds in total.
